8ch Attention-Hungry Games 80

Last Round: >>99289

Archive of Past Rounds: https://mega.nz/#F!BA8V0KYD!eRw01c3zLKSa3wzSEHE00g (Updated to Round 66.)

Hello /sudo/. A long time ago, CodeMonkey wanted to try a Hunger Games event for advertising boards using the global announcement feature. I'm surprised this made it to 80 threads.

For the 8chan Attention-Hungry Games, any board with less than 300 users can nominate themselves to participate, with up to 48 boards being able to participate (or we can go to 24 or 36 if we don't get enough boards). These 48 or so boards compete on a Hunger Games simulator hosted on BrantSteele. The current code for the regular events as of this writing is at http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=PjokHn06 which is based off of http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=FlMMyAqW.

The Mansion code that I used once but regretted using afterwards is at http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=9nWM8wfc from >>>/hungergames/17115

Anyway, the winner gets to be advertised as a global announcement for about a week.

As for the requirements for signing up:

1. No boards that promote raiding other 8chan boards.

2. Must have less than 300 active users at the start of the game.

3. Can't have won the hunger games in the past round. Last round's winner is >>>/cartoons/

4. Need to submit a SFW sentence that advertises their board that CodeMonkey can put in the global announcement. (NSFW boards are welcome to join, but the announcement should be SFW). Failure to do so will result in anons deciding your sentence via dubs, usually to your detriment. CodeMonkey will be the one to determine what is and what isn't SFW as he controls the global announcements.

5. It is recommended you post a picture with your nomination, and that picture should be square as it will be stretched otherwise. I will determine the gender of you tribute based on the picture. If I can't tell, I am defaulting to M. Also, MLP images will be ignored unless it came from a MLP board, if the BO approves of it, or from a certain image for /suicide/ until their BO says otherwise as they had that certain image before I added this part of the rule.

6. If a BO of a board does not want to participate, please don't nominate it. Board Owners, if you don't want to participate but someone nominated you, please let me know before the start of the round IN THIS THREAD with a link to your post with your capcode and I will remove it from the list. As of now, /miku/, /jp/, and /islam/ have asked not to participate.

7. Nominate only 1 board per IP hash per post. For posts that nominate more than 1 board and an IP hash nominating multiple boards, I will take the first board and ignore the rest, and I will know if you are samefagging. For those with VPNs, note that someone may be using the same VPN as you when nominating, which means they may have the same IP Hash and I can't distinguish VPN users from normal ones.

8. Once a round concludes, please wait until the next thread is created before you nominate a board.

The next round will likely start Sunday somewhere between 9am and 11am ET. Depending on amount of nominations, I may wait to run until the following day at that time.

With that all being said, nominate your boards now and suggest some events for either code if you want (or even better, put your events into the mansion code since I won't mind people messing with that code. Just let me know if you do update it). Also, if I missed anything, let me know so I can correct the OP for next time.

Sunlight on Sunshine

About Sunshine

Earlier, Sunshine came to my attention again after the source code for it was posted on freech's /intb/ board (https://archive.is/6sPs7#selection-2161.0-2205.53). Since users were concerned about it, I investigated the Sunshine code and looked back through my logs to figure out exactly when it was created, why it was created, for what purpose, and exactly what it does.

When?

Sunshine was created on October 9, 2015.

Why?

On October 8, 2015, the 8chan Administrator (who, at the time, was Hotwheels) received an email from the American authorities, who were concerned about a post on 8chan threatening an attack against a school in the Houston area (http://archive.is/lVsJe). Because of their incompetence, the 8chan Admin received a scanned picture of a photocopy of a printed 8chan post (pic related). The post in the picture (dated October 1, 2015) indeed contained a threat against a school in the Houston area, but due to the bureaucracy of the authorities, it arrived approximately a week too late and the original post had already been deleted.

Purpose

Sunshine was created by Hotwheels on October 9, 2015 after we discussed a way to make sure kids didn't get killed. It was meant to help prevent potential school shootings in the future if the shooter(s) happened to post specific threats on 8chan (i.e., bomb threats, shootings, etc.). Sunshine was neither an imposition nor a request by third parties. The pros of Sunshine were believed to outweigh the cons.

What Does It Do?

Sunshine takes the IP address and message of a poster, pads it with a few bytes of junk data, encrypts it using a RSA pub key, then stores the encrypted data. This data remains in encrypted form with decryption only possible by Hotwheels. With the way it is set up, nobody will be able to read anything on the Sunshine database unless they get access to Hotwheels' laptop.

Sunshine Security

When creating Sunshine, Hotwheels used a 2048-bit RSA public/private key pair with the openssl_private_decrypt() and openssl_public_encrypt() functions. The public key was stored on the server as sunshine.pem and the private key was stored on Hotwheels' laptop offsite - precisely because Hotwheels thought 8chan could be hacked one day (it was and here we are). Hotwheels told me which folder the key was in on his laptop in case he ever suddenly died and I needed to use Sunshine.

When Was It Used?

8chan gets around half a dozen requests per year from the authorities, mostly because of threats. Usually the authorities are quick and the data is still on the boards. According to my records, Sunshine was successfully used exactly once to help the Australian authorities.

How Long Was Sunshine Active?

Sunshine ran from its inception until early 2016, a period of turmoil for 8chan. During the Great Posting Crisis, it was culled to gain performance and improve posting. Sunshine was re-enabled in September 2016 and remained active until April 1, 2017. Sunshine is now disabled and will remain disabled on 8chan.

The Way Forward

I will be open-sourcing 8chan again and Sunshine will be included as a commit with instructions for any future imageboard admins who might want to use it. I have since asked Hotwheels to destroy the Sunshine private key and, on April 4, 2017 at exactly 09:56am GMT, Hotwheels destroyed it, thus ensuring Sunshine can never be unencrypted.

Of course, I have chat logs and emails to back this up, which is why I am able to give you so many details on such short notice.

Now that this is out of the way, I have mod.php to fix, boards to restore, and a website to run.

Please fix the MD5 hashes

I just spent about 8 hours developing a plugin for an application to be able to talk with 8chan. One thing the main application does is validate the md5 hashes of each file that is downloaded to ensure complete data integrity. If the md5 of the file does not match the expected md5 the file is deleted and it throws an error.

When I ran the new code for the first time and tried to access an 8chan thread, the first thing my program did was shit out a bunch of errors because it was failing to validate the md5s on almost every file.

I assumed it was a problem with my new code at first so I took a closer look, but what I found was that my code was doing as expected, translating the base64 encoded md5 returned by the rest API into hex and then comparing with the md5 hash of the file. I downloaded a few of the problem files with my web browser and then hashed them with md5sum and saw the file hashes were consistent with how my program was hashing the files. Then I took the base64 encoded md5 I got from the JSON API and put it through an online converter (https://cryptii.com/pipes/base64-to-hex) and saw that the converted base64-to-hex translation was consistent with the translation my program is doing.

Here is an example thread, lets look at the OP:

http://oxwugzccvk3dk6tj.onion/g/res/10293.json

From the REST API, the file url of the OP post should be:

> "http://oxwugzccvk3dk6tj.onion/file_store/" + tim + ext

http://oxwugzccvk3dk6tj.onion/file_store/8cc0c9a86c3bb457294d65df8be4a13b261f198f3fe47954aa3d2c4e962f7bcb.jpg

If you download that file using your web browser, then hash it with md5sum, you get:

> d183a635db181fd9b17ff8700a8acbaa

I downloaded and hashed the above file multiple times and got the same result.

Going back to the REST API, the same post has the following for the md5 field:

> xrzrjfL3ymSzx+S2POr4oQ==

This is obviously not the same encoding, to me it looks like base64 (like what 4chan does) so I converted it using https://cryptii.com/pipes/base64-to-hex

> In: xrzrjfL3ymSzx+S2POr4oQ==

> Out: c6 bc eb 8d f2 f7 ca 64 b3 c7 e4 b6 3c ea f8 a1

And this is exactly the error my program reports:

> MD5 does not match (expected: c6bceb8df2f7ca64b3c7e4b63ceaf8a1 / actual: d183a635db181fd9b17ff8700a8acbaa)

Am I doing anything wrong above? Please let me know if there is a different way that the md5 hashes should be translated to hex. If I'm not doing anything wrong could we please get this fixed soon? I might be able to lend a hand if assistance is needed creating a patch.

WHY THE FUCK IS THIS PIECE OF SHIT SITE SO SLOW

>mfw when counting the seconds between animated gif frames

R: 17 / I: 0 / P: 1 [R] [G] [-]

Another spammer, it's been two days in a row and it shows no signs of stopping. Bans are completely useless, of course, because there's an endless number of proxies at the spammer's disposal. (What's the point of bans anyway, if literally anyone can easily evade them?) Why isn't there an option to ban proxies, similar to how Tor posting can be disabled? Every thread is made from a different IP, so I have to ban each one individually and manually, because we don't have automated bans based on keywords.

The only thing that seems to make a difference is thread captcha, which I've always kept disabled because it's a pain in the ass for regular users and I'd rather not discourage thread creation on an already slow board. Limiting the maximum number of threads per hour saves a few minutes of time and gives me a little peace of mind that there won't be entire pages of spam to delete when I wake up, but other than that, it does nothing to stop the attacks. Why are we always at the mercy of spammers?

P.s.: I tried to send this to Codemonkey via e-mail, but the mail failed to deliver. Never had this problem before.

tl;dr WE NEED BETTER TOOLS TO FIGHT SPAM

Feature request

IMPORTANT

With all the censorship going on on youtube, lots of content creators are now moving onto bitchute.

For the intellectual midgets on leftypol, who seem to enjoy watching the right get censored because it is the only way that they can win debates, I would like to emphasise that the censorship on youtube has gotten so bad recently that LITERALLY EVERYONE is being censored there. Examples:

>Soph, a 13 y/o girl with close to a million subscribers who makes comedic videos for fun, has had videos deleted by youtube and has had her channel demonetised because she offended some jerk at buzzfeed.

>"Black Pigeon Speaks", a commentator and satirist with half a million subscribers just and his channel demonitised and censored by youtube because fuck you.

>Stephen Crowder, a comedian who referred to a vox dickhead with the twitter handle "gaywonk" as a lispy queer, has been demonitised by the youtube.

>Xurious, a musician who uploads instrumental music to youtube, that have literally NO LYRICS, has just been censored for "hate speech".

>The list goes on

>and on

>and on

….

Since many major content creators are now moving onto bitchute, I hereby formally request that the site add at least minimal support for bitchute.

Codemonkey, when you have some time, could you please write some code that enables users to embed bitchute videos?

Pedo reporting and saltmining thread

ITT we post links to posts that violate DOST or even appears to violate DOST. Anti pedo anons can then report them. Multiple reports will mean that at least one of the following global mods

1. SneakoSupremo

2. FEMA

3. ChrisHansen

will see them and remove them.

If it looks shady just post the links here. Even if it technically doesn't violate DOST some of the above global mods are also antipedo and they will delete it anyway and you can watch pedo butthurt.

Remember it doesn't matter if the picture itself is kosher. If there is some accompanying text by the pedo that implies sexualization that post can be deleted.

Individual Embedding

I've asked before, but it's apparently fallen off the board; so here we go again! I'd like the BO to be able to decide on individual embedding. For example: I run a SFW board, so I would like to keep youtube embeds, but disallow pornhub embeds. As it stands now, the choice is either all or none. Obviously, it's not a hugely important issue, but if it can be considered, that would be awesome. If you can't give individual for each allowed site, perhaps you could split between two SFW (youtube, vimeo, etc) and NSFW (redtube, pornhub, etc) options? Thanks!

Board rankings

The way board rankings are done makes no sense. the current #1 board is responsible for only 10% of the posts made in the last hour, while the #3 board is responsible for 25% of the posts made on the board.

As we all know, "active ISPs" is a useless measure, as it doesn't reflect site activity at all. An ISP can't be legitimately considered to be "active" if an anon is merely connected but not participating. There isn't even any way to determine that it is an IRL anon on the other end and not a bot/sniffer/spider/crawler/stat-pumping network. And as CM freely admits, it can not in any way be considered an accurate measure of the number of users actually on the site at a given time. The only use "active ISPs" has is as a metric to use to sell the site as being more active than it really is to uneducated potential advertisers.

Board rankings should be based on site activity only, because that is the only real measure of what the board is contributing to the site.

8ch Attention-Hungry Games 79

Last Round: >>98501

Archive of Past Rounds: https://mega.nz/#F!BA8V0KYD!eRw01c3zLKSa3wzSEHE00g (Updated to Round 66.)

Hello /sudo/. A long time ago, CodeMonkey wanted to try a Hunger Games event for advertising boards using the global announcement feature. Now back after the last winner was posted late and me having a whole slew of shit to deal with over the course of the Memorial Day weekend. While I got to go take care of other shit in the meanwhile, that can be done later at least as it is late now where I am.

Last round's winner is >>>/bimbo/

Wanted to start Saturday, but me being unable to make the thread yesterday ruined that plan due to not having enough time, or so I think.

With that all being said, nominate your boards now and suggest some events for either code if you want (or even better, put your events into the mansion code since I won't mind people messing with that code. Just let me know if you do update it). Also, if I missed anything, let me know so I can correct the OP for next time.

Now we have a global cuckptcha per post on TOR. Is this because of the hapas are superior poster? Pretty amazing that some /intl/ shill can still cause this shitty ass website to seize up 4 years after the fact.

All this means is that more traffic will fall from your shitty ass website because no normal person wants to expose themselves to using this shithole after its been taken over by shills and literal Nazis and you stupid fucks have sat on your hands and done nothing about it. It's probably too late to do anything now anyway, this is the future you chose. /pol/ and /leftypol/ should both be banned and replaced with /new/ like Hotwheels wanted. The final solution the the pedo question.

There are face scanning algorithms available that can detect the age of a person in a photo. We should incorporate one of those into this site and have it scan every image uploaded. If it detects youth in the image, it will automatically block the post and ban/delete all posts from the IP. It will make posting so difficult for the saboteurs that they will be unable to operate any further.

Funny how history repeats itself.

When Jim took over 8ch he alienated a group of vols and BOs who have in return spent the last couple years bringing this site to its knees, mainly though social engineering and exploiting the inherent weaknesses of this site's design and code, mostly on /b/ and /pol/.

Recently, /b/ has fallen, and its BO and vols are initiating attacks of their own on the board which its former users now inhabit. These attacks are the exact same ones that were inflicted upon /b/. The spambots are using the exact same code.

I find that to be very interesting and quite significant. Especially given the sudden drop in site users over the last month.
