With the new generation coming, let's talk about romhacks! My favorites (beyond tweaks) are Vega and Orange (ongoing Crystal based on).

Are there any hacks besides Vega with good fakemon?

romhacks are the fan-fiction of video games.

and that's gay.

>>16279359

Fanfiction only sucks because it's made by shitty amateurs. If a decent writer was to write fanfiction it might be worth a read. Romhacks are the same way, occasionally someone decent comes along and makes a hack that's fun.

There's also the fact that romhacks don't have to be written completely from scratch like fanfiction. Many hacks are just small tweaks and alterations to improve upon the base game. It doesn't have to be all OCs and fakemons.

c4c11f  No.16279892

i really enjoy rom hacks that increase the games difficulty without adding fakemon or completely changing the base game. right now i am playing blaze black 2, the difficulty is perfectly hard and make me actually have to use a good team instead of just blasting throu the game normally or cucking myself into not picking favorites and playing nuzlocke

>Xcom: enemy unkown was one of the greatest pc games ever made

Julian Gollop didn't make X-COM: UFO Defense though. He made Laser Squad 2. Microprose stepped in and told him that his shit was gay and made him add the strategic layer. If you wanted to know what game he wanted to make, look at Rebelstar or the first Laser Squad, because that is closer to his original vision. There is a reason that, after Microprose, he went on to make games like Rebelstar: Tactical Command, or the basis of UFO: Aftermath, and a reason that none of his multiple UFO Defense successors have been good. There is also a reason that this man, despite clearly having a desire to continue working on games, and his effort to continually market himself as the father of X-COM, isn't causing companies to trip over themselves to bring him onto their teams, and why he's making some of the worst attempts at damage control while revealing he is a poor slav. It's all because Gollop is nothing but an idea guy who has a bad record that people like to overlook.

The true unsung heroes are the Microprose employees who actually created UFO Defense and have to endure watching him publicly jerk off about how he did it all.

I was curious as to why I even wanted Phoenix Point, so I decided to pirate Enemy Within and run long war on it again because I enjoyed that the most.

It amazes me how such a buggy piece of shit was so well recieved. It amazes me how much effort went into changing a garbage piece of shit into something much better when better bases exist.

I sincerely hope that regardless of how Phoenix Point is, it serves as an infinitely better modding base than Enemy Within or X2 ever did.

She assuming it is just an ugly woman and not a tranny I really can't tell anymore apparently wrote Sunless Sea and some no-name 'interactive fiction' game called 80 days. Why she was worthy of an award in the first place is beyond me.

>“I have always found it a little strange that the year my community – this community – chose to give an IGF award to a game that was anti-colonialist, anti-racist, unabashedly feminist, pointedly diverse, and, well, written by an Indian woman, was also the same year that our audiences were engulfed by GamerGate. And it felt, at that time, as if we rejected that campaign of hatred. But it’s actually never felt closer to me right now.

>“A mutated strain of that poison that made video games its testing ground, has bubbled up in Christchurch, New Zealand. It fueled a monster who went to a mosque with murder in his heart and if we don’t utterly, and vocally, and wholly reject these people, and Nazis, and fascists, and white supremacists, then we are inviting them in.

>“If we make room for them, then there is no room for anyone else. And what we represent here tonight, must stand in opposition to them, and we have to do it together. But rejecting hate is only half the battle. The other half of the battle, in its way, much harder, it is: how do we make people feel welcome? How do we keep them safe and happy, as well as whole?”

I get the feeling that there's groups of people that go through a list every few months and copyright / harassment strike all those old videos on youtube. It takes zero effort to keep the videos up, but if some unemployed loser keeps getting them flagged and you have to jump through the review hoops I can see why it's easier just to take them down.

I'm basing this on the amount of time some of these people spend online "fighten' dem nazis" and from a few channels that mention how old videos got pinged seemingly at random.

4b2589  No.16279885

Nah. It won a few battles but overall it came at a time where there were just too many entrenched people in the media and developer positions. It's definitely bolstered an undercurrent of people who've had their eyes opened, so that's probably as good as a result as can be expected.

The hypocrisy is what irritates me the most. It's the point where you realise you're not dealing with someone who has a logical thought or rationality.

I still believe there is good news - Bioware was riding incredibly smug after the last Dragon Age and they've burnt every bridge with the market and EA with the last 2 bombs. There was another indie game ages ago… Sunset? Something about being a maid in a rich apartment and looking through all their stuff - a month after being a media darling the lead dev melted down how she couldn't pay rent since no-one would buy something that boring.

It's obvious marketing/sales have been pushing progressiveness for the last 5 years as this massive untapped market and those numbers just haven't materialised.

Let's say I bought into the "excitement" for this game. Let's say it's sitting there, collecting dust and unleashing a horrid rank on my Steam library. Let's say, I already know how shit it is, and it's bored me to tears the further I got with it.

Now let's say I'm metaphorically sucking Todd Howard's lying, two-timing cock by wanting to go back give it another go. This time, with mods.

I know what you're all thinking;

>Kill yourself

>Mods can't polish a turd

>I hope you deepthroat his cock and gag on it until you suffocate

All very valid points. However, I know what I'm getting myself into, which is probably just a sinkhole of disappointment. Still, they journey beats the destination in any given case. All I wanna know is, during your unfortunate waste of time playing this giant pile of dead horse puree, what mods did you have installed for Starbound? Did they improve your experience at all? Are there enough mods out there that basically fulfill every wish Chucklefuck promised at the start? Or will it just crash and burn harder than when it's running?

I was excited at first, but then they kept showing off just building and trying to avoid or cheat out of combat in their "gameplay" videos. I actually got into a fair few arguments with a friend about that. I ended up having the last laugh, but at the end of the day, I just wanted him to save his money and time. Yes, building is part of gameplay, but the thing that made Terraria stand out is the combat, and it got better.

I fear for the absolute state of the future of gaming which will inevitably gravitate toward streaming (Games as a Service - GaaS). And if all control input latency issues can be 100% mitigated, you will eventually be telling your children of a time when you actually owned a physical or digital copy of your game.

All the casuals will be jumping on the streaming bandwagon because that's just the kind of shit casuals do. Additionally, with the emergence of dirt-poor millennials who are lucky to have a pot to piss in (let alone an expensive gaming console or rig), the demand for streaming games will be driven even higher. As demand for consoles and $3000 gaming rigs goes down, the prices of those items will be driven up which will further decrease the demand for physical gaming hardware as more and more gamers jump ship in favor of less the less-costly streaming option. The cycle will repeat until gaming hardware is too expensive for even the most privileged richfags.

It's inevitable. Being an oldfag who's been around since the Commodore/Atari eras, I've seen our games slowly slipping from our grasp as we went from physical copies to mostly digital copies and now heading toward not even owning a digital copy at all. Soon will be gone the days of pulling out an old console or building a retro gaming rig so you can play your old games. Once the rightsholders decide they want to make a game disappear, they just remove it from the streaming service and it's gone for good.

So fuck the future basically. It's going to suck for gaming and you cannot prove me wrong.

>There will still be loading screens, graphics will be the same, and frame rate will most likely vary.

He's not really wrong. Assuming games will exclusively become services and not be tied down to anyone's hardware like it is now on console or PC, your hardware limitations are practically non existent since Google has retarded amounts of servers and hardware, allowing for much prettier graphics, higher frames (which comes at the cost of higher internet demand, of course) and lower loading times if they do something as wild as having games loaded on RAM drive.

The old "final boss/escape sequence/real final boss at the end" three stage finale. Like OoT, and Super Metroid to an extent, though it has a two stage boss battle and then the final escape from a self-destructing planet.

That's honestly one of the single worst tropes found in video games. Any game that removes all the skill you've been honing over the course of a game to replace it with something entirely different (usually an instant win button) has a shit finale. A final challenge should be an opportunity to exhibit full mastery over a game's mechanics.

>I'm completely new, where do I start?

Learn the Kana. Start with Hiragana and then move on to Katakana. Yes, you need both, and yes stroke order is important. Use Realkana or Kana Invaders for spaced repetition. Alternatively, you can use the Anki deck, but I'd recommend the first two. Tae Kim has a Kana diagram on his website, and you can use KanjiVG for pretty much any character.

>Alright, I know the Kana. Now what?

You have to learn vocabulary and grammar in order to speak and understand the language. Some will tell you to grind the Core2k/6k deck until you're blue in the face, others will tell you that grammar is more important. Truth is, you need both, but it doesn't really matter which one you decide to do first. You're teaching yourself here, so you move at your own pace and do what you're most receptive to. If you want grammar first, then Tae Kim has a great introductory grammar guide, there are numerous grammar related videos in Anon's all-in-one-Anki-package, IMABI has an active forums and an abundance of information on grammar, and there's always YouTube if you're lazy. On the other hand, if you want to learn vocab first, then grab the Core2k/6k and grind until you're blue in the face. For mnemonics, see Kanji Damage.

>Well this is great and everything, but I still need more help

I'd judge success by "Here's this random japanese text, can you read it? Yes? Cool. No? You suck.", and I'm not here yet. If there's some baka gaijin compatible text, I might be able to figure out something, otherwise it's hopeless.

I'm not sure about this context thing, unless I see the same word in the same context thousands of times, I'll forget it. This means that I'll either only learn a handful of words, or I put every sentence I read to anki and hope it'll stick.

I'd argue about core's usefulness, it's not perfect, but it contains a decent selection of commonly used words. Unless you're reading something abstract or academical or stuff like that, it'll contain many words from it, and it matters whether you have to look up 10 words per sentence or per page.

How do you nerds deal with gauge attacks? I've got quite a bit of raw HP but it still hurts. Metal guard special action can stump a lot of them but the martial arts one does the most damage and triggers off a normal attack which uses up the guard.

Besides pressure, there's disturbance, but its worse as its single target. You could build a tank pet with provoke, resilient, barrier, etc and hope it can eat them instead of you. Landing your own gauge release takes off a chunk off their gauge as well (at least with short swords). As always, rods of teleport can buy you time.

>to kill the officer, carefully lay plan

>go hunt monsters on asteroid, drag corpses back to mining outpost, then use lazarus injector

>tell my target that I need his help to kill monsters who have infested the outpost

Well I learned a lot about traitoring and I feel like I at least earned the moral victory of managing to even kill the sec officer, even if I got caught afterwards. And I managed to do it without any teracrystals, up until I blew myself up.

If the detective didn't want to come along I probably could have done it, since I wouldn't have been rushed, so good on whichever anon that was for having some sort of 6th sense. It probably didn't matter ultimately, since I still would almost certainly have failed to hijack the shuttle, even with an emag.

You made a fatal mistake that is CRUCIAL to any mining asteroid murder. Turning off the comms. You just walk over the telecomm equipment on the west wing on the mining station and use your multitool on it. No comms. No calls for help.

You legitimately had a good plan (and original) you just missed that one little part. For your part you probably could have stun+cuffed and removed his headset before he yelled on comms quick enough. Most people panic and don't do it right away.

You had bad luck with a lot of the crew being suited up, everyone maxed on sensors, and everyone being friendly. Setups that get squashed like that are gonna happen some more times before you cover all your vulnerabilities in your tater tot plans.

Last OP was a faggot, let's get an actually good thread going.

Discuss half-assed attempts or aspects thrown into video games by developers. Not so much about flaws, but otherwise confusing inclusions which could be argued in both ways.

>Okami

>Certain Stray Beads become inaccessible after progressing too far into the game

>This progression sometimes has no indication

For what purpose? Is it supposed to incentivize me to replay the game? Why should I be forced to go after certain objectives or otherwise have the threat of having them taken away? Shouldn't I be able to experience all of the game whenever I want to about it? I get it's included, because the world does change as you play and this is supposed to emphasize that, but still, it seems odd to block off players from content in any way. At what point should games be pushed for artistic or aesthetic merit?

I wonder if there are any passion project games with similar or as questionable choices, or if these are more of an indicator of corporate meddling. I don't know, seems to me almost every game can have some sort of element or aspect about it which someone will find jarring or odd, in which case I'll be interested to see what you think or what you would consider to be a questionable design choice.

And maybe discuss how they could've been improved or what could've been done instead.

Spellforce, I hate this fucking game's design choices involving player speed and Orcs. Although I did have some issues with the whole "settlement" shit that's more to do with the game dropping that in favor of tower defense which kind of ruins the whole mood of that.

For player movement speed: you are slow as molasses and takes you half an hour to cross a fucking map that should only take you minutes in another RTS mere minutes. There is exactly two items which you must equip if you wanna move faster but it isn't even substantial enough to bother and it doesn't increase the movement speed of anything else. This is by far the worst part of the whole game and why I quit before tackling the expansions.

For Orcs: Orcs are the most god damned useless race in the whole campaign there is a whopping 5 out of eight units that are not worth jack shit. 3 of them are starting units the game gives you up front and are so useless that they get their asses kicked by the 1st tier units of other factions. Only the 2nd one is good because it's cheap cannon fodder for your good ranged units. The gimmick for Orcs is that they don't have healers which is ok but both units you get in their place are worthless except for a bug if you're a Necromancer like I was. I ended up just summoning 700 skeletons and put them in between a tower wall to hold a position and whittle away at buildings with an endless spooky horde of undead midgets because they last longer.

Still no porn mods.

>why should I play Oblivion? Why not Skyrim or Morrowind?

Because Oblivion is its own little. Skyrim is Oblivion reduced and simplified. Morrowind is Oblivion without the fun ragdoll spasms and movement. Modded Oblivion is entertaining and actually has wild enemies and crazy dungeons to explore. MMM gives you over a hundred creatures. Better Cities adds a fuctkon to explore in the cities. OOO makes the game challenging.

>what do I need to have fun modding?

Get Oblivion Mod Manager. Get BOSS GUI. Get Wyre Bash.

After this, you're going to want to get patches like the unoffical oblivion patch. You're going to want to get a few crash fixes. 4gb ram patcher. OBSE Script Extender. CTD and Memory patch ENBoost. EngineBugFixes. Menu Alt-Tab Crash Fix. Oblivion Stutter Remover. NVAC - New Vegas Anti Crash.

>That's a lot to do. What if I install these and it's still crashing?

Remember to use BOSS GUI to sort load order. If there are still constant crashing, use Wyre Bash to make a bashed patch. If that doesn't resolve anything, it's time to delete a few of the mods with Oblivion Mod Manager. You can get all this stuff at Nexus Mods.

>what mods are essential?

Before you're going to do any modding, you need to have all the DLC expansions. This can be bought in the GOTY edition. Oscure's Oblivion Overhaul, MMM, and Better Cities are all good. Alluring Potions and Alluring Beverages makes potions aesthetic as fuck. You're going to want the NPC mods to make the world feel less empty. Supreme Magicka to balance out magic… Get Better Dungeons while you're at it.

NPC Mods:

Roaming NPCs.

TamrielTravelers. (One thing causes crashes, but that can easily be unchecked and disabled. TamrielTravelersItems, which can be unchecked in Oblivion Mod Manager in a box; causes conflicts for me).

Populated Prisons.

Tavern Goers.

Crowded Cities.

NPC mods make the game feel less empty. It is the biggest problem I havPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

None of the nonhuman races (or Redguards) match up completely with any one human culture. Orcs have some Mongol influence, but they aren't really that similar. They don't ride horses and they aren't particularly good archers. Their names use patronymics. They live in the mountains. They've never had a great empire of their own.

Starpulse wave, and lightning artillery guns. So pretty weak, but I am pretty sure the idea is that it is supposed to be near another ship and use the starpulse to destroy incoming fighters/bombers. Basically a dedicated escort for the GC they made, since most Necron ships want to be as close as possible to fuck people's faces in with lightning arcs, particle whips, and star pulse waves going off all at once.

>C

Loses the starpulse wave and particle whips, but has a shit ton of lightning arc batteries. I think eight total. I guess the idea is long range support.

>BC

More focus on particle whips, and less emphasis on lightning arcs. Probably the only ship you aren't going to keep in the arc stance and instead in reload to fire the particle whips faster. Would be a good to combine with the upgrade that makes particle whip damage jump from ship to ship, but that is flagship only.

>GC

This ship looks like a fucking abomination. It is also their carrier. Four hangers, and some guns.

The emphasis seems to be on having ships that are less about closing in and alpha striking. Which is something that was questionable in the first place, since pretty much every short range fleet either has some emphasis on boarding, or throws out enough numbers that even if they don't, they manage to brute force it.

The only one I would use is the BC. Everything else has specific flaws or run completely counter to the upgrades they get in campaign. Kind of a bad idea to have a ship off to the side pulling an enemy towards it while the ships nearby are pulling it towards it. Particle whips help because they ignore shields and count enemy armor as reduced. The carrier kind of sucks because they only have fighter-bomber hybrids; so you can't use fighter screens to keep your bombers alive and thus use the bombers more than three times.

GACHA TRASH

The worst part of this is that Link looked really good until I realized all it was meant to do was link (yeah I get it Type-Moon very funny) Extella with Grand Order. The game even plays out like Grand Order with shadow servants, blue particles, servant-spawning fortresses, ENTIRELY portrait-driven cutscenes and even hearing from your servant in your room is like getting snippets of dialogue from your cards.
